Fans of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices know that Magnus Bane is banned from Peru—and now they can find out why. One of ten adventures in The Bane Chronicles.
There are good reasons Peru is off-limits to Magnus Bane. Follow Magnus’s Peruvian escapades as he drags his fellow warlocks Ragnor Fell and Catarina Loss into trouble, learns several instruments (which he plays shockingly), dances (which he does shockingly), and disgraces his host nation by doing something unspeakable to the Nazca Lines.
This standalone e-only short story illuminates the life of the enigmatic Magnus Bane, whose alluring personality populates the pages of the #1 New York Times bestselling series, The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices series. This story in The Bane Chronicles, What Really Happened in Peru, is written by Sarah Rees Brennan and Cassandra Clare.

So, What Really Happened in Peru was enjoyable and interesting; it just wasn't all that compelling. I felt like it had more or Sarah's writing style than Cassie's (not that I don't love SRB, it just wasn't very Mortal Instruments). Magnus was silly and drunk all the time, and not like the Magnus that I've come to know throughout TMI & TID.

This novella follows Magnus throughout his various stays in Peru. We meet Ragnor Fell and a blue skinned lady whose name I don't remember.  Magnus has a couple romances, which aren't all that interesting, really. I feel like this story tried too hard to be funny. If the rest of the shadowhunter books had been written this way, and if I didn't feel like they hadn't captured the Magnus we know, then maybe.

I feel like I really wanted to read about Magnus enchanting a carpet and puking all over the desert, not his friends telling him about it the next day. A lot of this story is told that way, and its less story than just being told stuff. I don't like just being told stuff.

I know I love Cassie Clare and SRB, but maybe not together. And yeah, you're thinking, I'm sure Cassie knows her characters better than you do, which is very, very true. I just didn't understand Magnus's behavior in this book. I do have higher hopes for the later Bane Chronicles, and I will probably read the ones involving the Herondale family.
